About Rick
My interest in blacksmithing began in 1992, when I inherited the tools from my father‘s forge. Soon, I had set up my own forge and studio to study and learn traditional forging techniques. I quickly developed a passion for the craft. Simultaneously, I discovered and began developing my abilities as an artist and designer. In subsequent years, I studied with several master blacksmiths.
In 2002, I founded Emerald City Forge in Massachusetts to pursue my love of blacksmithing full time. In 2005, we moved to a large, modern shop and studio in the northwoods of Wisconsin and changed to name to Island City Forge. The new studio is near Minocqua, Wisconsin, also known as the “Island City.”
My metalwork is inspired by:
- An appreciation of nature’s beauty
- A deep and quiet spirituality
- Respect for client’s desires and
- The transformative nature of the forging process itself
Blacksmithing opens up a world of creative possibilities to bring authenticity and originality to one’s environment and I love this work.
To address the structural, safety and durability requirements of the metalwork, I rely upon my experience as an engineer, lighting designer and remodeling contractor. I hold a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Marquette University, and a Construction Supervisor License in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Most of the work I execute is done on commission. Recently, I have started to produce and stock some of the smaller creations for direct sale and through galleries.
